Actress Mary Beth Hurt: Iowa Time Machine September 26, 1946



Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On September 26, 1946, actress Mary Beth Hurt was born in Marshalltown. A three-time Tony Award-nominated actress, Hurt is best known for her performances in the films “Interiors” (1978), “The World According to Garp” (1982), and “Six Degrees of Separation” (1993).



Born Mary Beth Supinger in the seat of Marshall County, the other great actress of Marshalltown, Jean Seberg, babysat young Mary Beth. Hurt went on to study drama at the University of Iowa before enrolling in New York University’s Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts.



Making her stage debut in 1974, Hurt shined on Broadway and garnered three Tony Award nominations for her work in “Trelawny of the Wells,” “Crimes of the Heart,” and “Benefactors.” Debuting on the silver screen as Joey in Woody Allen’s 1978 film “Interiors, Hurt portrayed one of three sisters dealing with the emotional fallout of a family’s disintegration.



Over the decades, Hurt went on to continue wowing audiences with notable appearances in films including “Chilly Scenes of Winter,” “The World According to Garp,” “The Age of Innocence,” and “The Dead Girl.” #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
