Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On February 8, 1983, Barry Stevens hit an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer to beat tenth-ranked Missouri in overtime. One of the first major wins of the Johnny Orr era, the upset at Hilton Coliseum, showed a program on the rise.
The Cyclones started off hot in Johnny Orr’s third season at the helm with five straight wins. The season, however, ultimately proved an up-and-down endeavor. Sitting at 10-9 as the 18-3 Tigers crossed the border to arrive in Ames, the young Cyclones squad relied heavily on sophomore Barry Stevens and freshman Jeff Hornacek.
The game went back and forth throughout the evening. Iowa State held a slim 30-28 lead at the break. At one point in the second half, Stevens scored 13 straight points for the Cyclones as the Tigers tried to pull away. When Stevens missed a 30-footer as regulation expired, the score stood at 65-65. Mizzou managed to climb to a 72-71 lead with fifteen seconds remaining in overtime.
When Iowa State grabbed a rebound and took a time-out with nine seconds on the clock, Orr asked Barry Stevens for one more bucket. Stevens caught the ball coming off a screen and knocked down the jumper as time expired to knock out the Tigers. Chants of “Bar-ry, Bar-ry” rang as the Hilton faithful stormed to court to celebrate a 40-point performance for Stevens and a huge win for the Cyclones. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
