
Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On April 1, 1942, legendary Iowa State cross country coach Bill Bergan was born in Cedar Falls. Known for his transformative leadership and unparalleled success in collegiate athletics, Bergan’s journey from a small-town athlete to a national coaching icon continues to inspire Iowans.

Bergan’s coaching career took off in 1971 when he joined Iowa State University as the head cross country coach. At the time, ISU’s program was struggling, but under his guidance, it became a powerhouse. His Cyclones claimed two NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships (1989 and 1994) and an astounding 25 Big Eight Conference titles. Bergan’s athletes dominated, earning 110 All-America honors and producing 16 Olympians. His ability to nurture talent and inspire excellence set him apart as one of the greatest minds in the history of track and field.

Beyond the accolades, Bergan’s impact on his athletes and the sport was profound. He was named NCAA National Coach of the Year multiple times and earned district Coach of the Year honors 19 times.

In recognition of his contributions, the USTFCCCA renamed its Midwest Region Outstanding Men’s Cross Country Runner Award the “Bill Bergan Award” in 2017, a testament to his enduring influence on the sport.
