Cyclones Go Streaking: Iowa Time Machine February 16, 1999

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On February 16, 1999, the Iowa State Cyclones beat Missouri to kick off a 39-game home winning streak at Hilton Coliseum. Running through November 30, 2001, this historic run captivated fans and solidified Hilton as one of the most intimidating arenas in college basketball. Iowa State’s dominance on their home court grew into legend as Jamaal  Tinsley, Marcus Fizer, and the rest of the Cyclones proved unbeatable in Ames.

The streak started with a 64-42 blowout win over Baylor and a narrow 52-50 win over Kansas on an iconic Marcus Fizer dunk with under a minute to play. When the Cyclones added all-time great guard Jamaal Tinsley to complement Fizer the following season, the home streak really started rolling. As the Cyclones soared toward the Elite Eight, they reeled off memorable home wins over ranked Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma State teams to solidify their standing on the national stage. With Fizer headed for the NBA, pundits questioned how long the streak would last.

The 2000-2001 Cyclone backcourt featuring Tinsley and Kantrail Horton easily kept the momentum going. Following memorable wins over ranked Oklahoma and Kansas teams during the Big-12 schedule, Tinsley finished his two-year Cyclone career without losing at Hilton Coliseum. Each game brought the fans to their feet, allowing players to feed off the spell-binding atmosphere of Hilton Magic.

Like all good things, the streak came to an end on December 1, 2001, when San Jose State handed Iowa State its first home loss in almost three years. Even after the streak was broken, the legacy of Iowa State’s 39 consecutive home victories lives on. Hilton Coliseum remains a place where the Cyclones always seem just a few games away from starting another historic home run. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
