Drew Tate: Iowa Time Machine October 8, 1984

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On October 8, 1984, Hawkeye quarterback Drew Tate was born. Best known for his 56-yard game-winning touchdown to Warren Holloway to lift the Hawkeyes to a win over LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl.

Born and raised in Texas, Tate turned heads during a record-setting high school career, during which he racked up 12,183 passing yards and 113 touchdowns. Although he originally committed to playing college ball at Texas A&M, Tate ended up heading to Iowa City to play for Kirk Ferentz after appearing in the 2003 US Army All-American Bowl.

Playing for the Hawkeyes from 2003-2006, Tate amassed 8,292 yards and 61 touchdowns over the course of his college career. An All-Big Ten First-Team (coaches) selection, Tate also captured Big Ten Player of the Year honors from College Football News. In the Capital One Bowl, Tate etched his name in Hawkeye lore after LUS took the lead with 46 seconds to play. Nick Saben’s defense dug in, but Tate connected with Holloway on the game’s final play to win the game as time expired.

Tate played professionally for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders, and Ottawa Redblacks before going into coaching. Stops at Coastal Carolina, the BC Lions, UT Martin, and the University of Northern Iowa before taking his current job with the Toronto Argonauts. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
