Hartlieb to Cook: Iowa Time Machine November 14, 1987

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On November 14, 1987, Hawkeye quarterback Chuck Hartlieb let fly a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth and forever to Marv Cook. As time wound down, Marv Cook caught the pass to help lift Iowa over Ohio State in Columbus for the first time since 1959.

Hayden Fry’s Hawkeyes entered the horseshoe in Columbus with a 7-3 record following a dominant road win over Northwestern the week prior. The Buckeyes, scuffling after back-to-back losses to Michigan State and Wisconsin, hoped to hand Fry another loss in Ohio Stadium. The game went back-and-forth early, eventually allowing Iowa to enter halftime with a narrow 15-14 lead. Ohio State took the lead 21-15 with 6:14 left in the third quarter on a Tom Tupa pass to Jeff Ellis.

Iowa counterpunched, retaking the lead 22-21 on a 1-yard David Hudson run with 9:11 to play, only to see the Buckeyes pull back ahead 27-22 with just 2:45 to play. Behind the chains, Hartlieb came to the line facing 4th and 23-to-go with under a minute to play. Taking the snap, Hartlieb reared back and unloaded a 28-yard completion to Marv Cook. With just six seconds left on the clock, Cook’s catch sealed a 29-27 Iowa victory.

“What a football game,” Hayden Fry commented after the victory. “I’ve been in a lot of important games in my 36 yards, but I’ve never had one more meaningful to a group of young men.” Iowa finished the season 10-3, capping the season with a Holiday Bowl victory over Wyoming. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
