Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On January 2, 2013, long-time University of Iowa athletic trainer and travel coordinator John Streif retired. Streif left a legacy of compassionately caring for Hawkeye athletes while making sure they were ready to play and got where they needed to go.
Born in Manchester, Iowa, Strief attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1970. After a brief stint as the assistant athletic trainer at West Point Military Academy and several summers spent working with the Detroit Lions pre-season camp, Streif returned to Iowa City in 1972 to serve as a part of the athletic training staff. In 1980, Steif also took on the role of travel coordinator. Finally, he also started serving as a member of Iowa’s Athlete Assistance Program.
In June of 2001, Streif was recognized with the Athletic Training Service Award. In 2008, the Iowa Athletic Trainers Society celebrated Streif with the organization’s Hall of Honor Award. During the early 2000s, the University of Iowa further recognized Streif's consistent commitment to Hawkeye athletes by naming the athletic training facilities at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in his honor following a request and gift from legendary Iowa basketball player Ronnie Lester.
“John Streif is probably the nicest and most genuine person I’ve ever met. Happy Retirement!” wrote former Hawkeye star Adrian Clayborn following the long-time trainer’s retirement. Despite stepping into a well-earned retirement, Streif’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched as a part of the University of Iowa Athletic Department. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
