Marcus Fizer: Iowa Time Machine August 10, 1978

Iowa Time Machine ⏰: On August 10, 1978, Iowa State basketball legend Marcus Fizer was born. A dominant force in the paint for the Cyclones, Fizer led Iowa State to a Big 12 regular season title, a Big 12 tournament title, and an NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.

Born in Inkster, Michigan, Fizer dominated at Arcadia High School in Arcadia, Louisiana. After selection as a McDonald’s All-American, Fizer headed to Ames to play for Tim Floyd’s Cyclones. Although Larry Eustachy took over at Iowa State after Fizer’s freshman year, the 6’8” big man started to put together an all-time great career at Hilton Coliseum.

Fizer racked up numerous accolades at Iowa State: All-Big 12 honorable mention (freshman), National first-team All-Freshman, first-team All-Big 12 (sophomore and junior), Big 12 Player of the Year (junior), Big 12 tournament Most Outstanding Player (junior), and consensus first-team All-America (junior). Fizer also led the Cyclones to largely unparalleled team success when the team dominated the Big 12 and stormed to the Elite Eight during his junior season.

Drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 2000 NBA Draft, Fizer reunited with Tim Floyd. Over an NBA career stretching from 2000 to 2006, Fizer averaged 9.6 points and 4.6 rebounds. #IowaOTD #IowaHistoryDaily #IowaHistoryCalendar
